Healthy Skin, Healthy Body at Rejuve Medspa
By Amy George
The philosophy of a business often reflects the experiences and interests of its founder. Rejuve Medspa has several core values, one of which is to “treat each person as unique individuals, celebrating their unique qualities rather than trying to standardize beauty.” After working 20 years in emergency medicine, owner Dr. Giao Kaplan made the shift to aesthetic medicine so she could do just that.
As a board-certified emergency physician, Dr. Kaplan managed acute medical issues. She found herself wanting to focus on prevention and wellness with a schedule that would allow her “to spend ample time with patients and to develop continuity of care and personal connections.” An added bonus would be the opportunity to combine her science background with her artistic talents and creativity.
Dr. Kaplan retired from emergency medicine and started working exclusively as an aesthetic physician. Less than a year later, she opened Rejuve Medspa in Newcastle Commons in February 2021. The medical spa offers a wide range of treatments and services, including anti-aging therapies, regenerative medical treatments, and body contouring. The team offers everything from scar and acne revision and hair restoration to cellulite removal and laser skin resurfacing.
Patient experience is at the top of Rejuve’s core values. “Every patient needs to feel special,” said Dr. Kaplan. “We provide a relaxing, comfortable environment in a spa-like setting.” Patients receive customized treatment options with the aim of achieving natural-looking results in the most efficient way. “We educate and engage patients so they can choose the best treatment options in order to achieve their aesthetic goals.”
As Medical Director, Dr. Kaplan prioritizes safety. “We place a strong emphasis on continuing medical education,” Dr. Kaplan shared. The staff stay current on technologies and treatments, thoroughly research their equipment and procedures, and choose products and devices that are “clinically proven to be efficacious based on clinical trials and FDA clearances.”
In addition to the team’s clinical expertise is the safety of the building itself. “Rejuve Medspa was designed and built during the height of the COVID pandemic with safety in mind,” said Dr. Kapan. Rejuve has a special ventilation system specifically designed to filter out bacterial and viral pathogens. Fans and vents in treatment rooms redirect air outside to prevent cross-contamination; though, in keeping with the spa environment, they are hidden behind wood-slatted ceilings.
When asked what she enjoys most about her job, Dr. Kaplan said that she appreciates “interacting and building personal connections with clients and understanding and treating their aesthetic goals.” That sense of connection expands to her staff. “Every member of the Rejuve team is equally valued. We are dedicated to helping one another thrive, learn, and grow.”

Brotox - Botox for men
what about guys?
Historically, neuromodulators such as Botox or Dysport were considered taboo in the guy’s world. The paradigm has shifted over the last decade as the desire to look good and preserve a youthful appearance gained traction over stigma and the hesitancy of being judged. Men aren't immune to the aging process. Botox and Dysport have become popular among men because wrinkles make them appear older. A growing need to remain competitive in today’s society (job market, social media, etc.) is the driving force behind Brotox popularity.
Brotox is a nickname for the injectable neuromodulator procedure when it is referred to male clients. Botox and Dysport temporarily relax the muscles that lead to formation of wrinkles. Skin elasticity is reduced due to loss of collagen and elastin in the skin. This causes fine lines and wrinkles to eventually become permanent deep folds. That is why early treatment to prevent wrinkles is important.
How is Botox or Dysport different for men?
While men are interested in reversing the clock and preventing wrinkles, their aesthetic goals may be different from women. Many men prefer to preserve some of their movements. Your aesthetic injector will talk to you about the balance of softening your wrinkles and maintaining a masculine look.
what areas can botox or dysport treat?
WHAT ELSE CAN botox and dysport TREAT BESIDES WRINKLES?
Gummy smile - showing too much gums when smiling can be alleviated by relaxing the muscles that elevate when you smile.
TMJ - teeth grinding or clenching causing jaw soreness can be improved by relaxing the masseter muscles that help with chewing.
Uneven facial expressions - stronger muscles causing uneven facial expressions can be relaxed to create symmetry.
Facial contouring - muscles tend to atrophy (shrink) after repeat dosing of neuromodulators. Thus jawline slimming can be achieved after treating the masseter muscles that help control chewing.
Acne - by reducing pore size and sebum (oil) production, there is improvement of acne breakouts.
Excessive sweating - by relaxing the sweat glands, there is less sweat production.
Hair restoration - by relaxing the ciliary muscles that are attached to hair follicles, there is improved blood flow. Improved blood flow to the scalp allows for better nutrient (growth factor) supply to the hair follicles. One study showed 8 of 10 people treated with Botox for male pattern baldness had good to excellent results: "A Pilot Study to Evaluate Effectiveness of Botulinum Toxin in Treatment of Androgenetic Alopecia in Males"
What’s the difference between Botox and Dysport?
Both Botox and Dysport contain Botulinum toxin Type A (BoNT-A). Botox is manufactured by Allergan, while Dysport is manufactured by Galderma. All BoNT-A products have the same size and weight of active neurotoxin. However, Botox and Dysport have different accessory protein complex components. Dysport is known to have a faster onset of action. 30% of patients have some response to Dysport within 24 hours, 73.3% have response within 48 hours, and 86.7% have response within 72 hours. However, the full effect of either Dysport or Botox will be apparent after 2 full weeks.
For most people, Botox and Dysport lasts for about 3 months. Results will vary depending on your individual muscle size, strength, and activity, among other factors. For many patients, Dysport also has a longer duration of action compared with Botox, sometimes up to 4-5 months.
how much botox or dysport will i need?
Every person responds differently to Botox and Dysport depending on the size, activity and strength of their muscles, and their metabolism. Each treatment cycle may vary based on metabolic rates, stress and activity levels. Physically active individuals tend to have shorter duration due to higher metabolic rates. The needle used to inject Botox or Dysport is very small, and the procedure is very well tolerated. There is no downtime.
